Wenbinshan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Wenbinshan Fm is a part of the Mesozoic coal bearing strata in Fujian. Fujian Geological Bureau 303 Geological team named it in 1964. In 1972, Fujian Metallurgical Industry Bureau had the first public citation. The named section is located in Wenbinshan minefield, Zhangping coal mine, Zhangping City, Fujian Province. It is a set of rock strata between the coarse-grained feldspar quartz sandstones of the overlying Jurassic Lishan Formation and the muddy siltstones and mudstones of the underlying Dakeng Fm.
Synonym: Wenbingshan Fm
Lithology and Thickness
Lithology can be divided into upper and lower parts. Lower part is deep gray, gray black thick sandstone and siltstone interbedded with thin silty mudstone, the bottom part is thick gravel sandstone or giant conglomerate, containing coal 8 to 9 layers with thickness 96 to 150 m. Upper part is gray black medium thin mudstone, siltstone, fine sandstone, carbonaceous mudstone and coal line, with 24 to 76 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Thick layer of gravelly sandstone, sandstone at bottom which is in disconformable contact with underlying Dakeng Fm with a thin layer of grey black siltstone at the top.
Upper contact
The top part is in disconformable contact with Lishan Fm of Early Jurassic with gray white thick layer coarse-grained feldspar quartz sandstone at the bottom.
Regional extent
The lithology of this formation is relatively stable, and it is distributed in central Fujian and southwestern Fujian, mainly exposed in Zhangping, Yongding, Wuping, Shanghang, Changting area etc. There is a disconformable contact in Anren, Zhangping, while other areas are unconformable over older strata of different ages.
